First time?

Getting started

Glucera connects to your glucometer the first time you open it. Here's the basic flow:

  1. Grant permissions. Glucera will ask for Bluetooth, Apple Health, and optionally notifications. All three are recommended for the best experience.
  2. Turn on your glucometer. Bluetooth meters usually advertise for 30–60 seconds after powering on. Have it nearby when you open the app.
  3. Tap your meter when it appears. Glucera will pair and sync your full history on the first connection. Subsequent syncs only fetch new readings.
  4. Check Apple Health. Readings appear in Health → Browse → Body Measurements → Blood Glucose. They're yours, independent of Glucera.
Troubleshooting

Glucometer won't connect

Bluetooth glucometers are picky. Run through this checklist before giving up.

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the app has permission

Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth and confirm Glucera is listed and allowed. If it's missing, delete and reinstall the app — the permission request will reappear.

  2. Power-cycle the glucometer

Turn the meter off and back on. Most meters only advertise over Bluetooth for 30–60 seconds after power-on. If you've been waiting longer than a minute, cycle it again.

  3. Remove the meter from iOS Bluetooth settings

Go to iOS Settings → Bluetooth. If your glucometer appears there, tap the ⓘ button and choose "Forget This Device." Then reconnect via Glucera, not the iOS settings panel.

  4. Check Apple Health permissions

Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Glucera. Make sure both Read and Write are enabled for Blood Glucose. Without write permission, the sync will fail silently.

  5. Restart Glucera

Swipe up from the app switcher to fully close Glucera, then reopen it. This resets the Bluetooth stack. If your meter is on and advertising, it should appear in the scanner within a few seconds.

  6. Confirm your meter works with standard Bluetooth

Glucera works with meters that follow the standard Bluetooth glucose protocol. Some older meters use a proprietary connection that only works with the manufacturer's own app — those won't work with Glucera. See the compatible devices list below if you're not sure.

Compatibility

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • My readings synced but I can't see them in Apple Health

Check that Glucera has Write permission for Blood Glucose in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Glucera. If Write is off, readings will appear in the app but won't save to Health.

Also confirm you're looking in the right place: Health → Browse → Body Measurements → Blood Glucose. Readings show in chronological order with "Glucera" as the source.

  • The app is showing an old reading — it hasn't updated

Glucera syncs when you open the app and your glucometer is on and in range. Background sync runs for a few minutes after a connection is established, but isn't continuous.

If the reading looks stale, turn your meter on (within Bluetooth range), then foreground Glucera. The hero card shows a "Stale" badge when the most recent reading is older than your configured threshold (default 8 hours).

  • Can I use Glucera with multiple glucometers?

Yes. Open Settings → Manage Devices to see all paired meters. Glucera will reconnect to whichever device is nearby and advertising. Readings from all devices are stored in Apple Health and shown in the unified reading list.

  • Will I lose my readings if I delete and reinstall the app?

No. Your readings are in Apple Health, not in Glucera. Deleting the app has no effect on your health data. When you reinstall and reconnect, Glucera picks up from your last reading and only fetches anything newer.

  • The Apple Watch complication shows no data

The complication shows the reading last synced on your iPhone. Make sure you've synced at least one reading on your iPhone while the Watch app is installed. If it still shows nothing, remove and re-add the complication on the watch face.

The complication also requires watchOS 10 or later and the Glucera Watch app to be installed. Open the Watch app on your iPhone to confirm the Glucera Watch app is installed.

  • How do I export my readings?

Tap the ··· menu in the top right of the main screen and choose Export CSV. This generates a CSV file of all readings in Apple Health which you can share via email, Files, or any other app.

You can also export directly from Apple Health: Health → Browse → Blood Glucose → Export all data (via the share button at the top right).
